An Interview with Jean-Marie Williams, Teacher at Pocono Adventist Christian School
What inspired you and the students to write this book, “Now You Know?”
We were working on informational writing, where the students could list ten things they knew a lot about. Good writers often write about what they know a lot about or their experiences.
After seeing the kids’ vast knowledge in different areas, I told them they had what it took to write a book because, like great authors, they also possessed an extensive knowledge.
We studied several authors, such as Patricia Polacco, who wrote Childhood Experiences, and Eloise Greefield, who wrote African American Experiences, to see their writing styles. One day, I jokingly asked, “Why can’t you write a book?” The kids were excited, so I decided to research the possibilities. Fast-forward to today, and they are all authors.
How did you decide to get the students involved?
Because the kids were excited about the idea, I wanted to motivate and challenge them and let them know that whatever they put their minds to, they could accomplish it.
Was it an easy task working towards your goals of writing a book?
The kids worked tirelessly to illustrate their ideas in writing. Although we missed some manuscript submission deadlines and delayed attempts to complete the assignment, it ultimately paid off.
How do you intend to promote the book?
We have had book signings, a publishing party, and a read-out-loud event.
Parents are helping to promote the book. I encourage our supporters to visit the following website, https://portal.studentreasures.com/shopping/ordercopies
Type in pin: 0370812
Follow through with the quantity, type, etc.
They can also visit our school’s website and look under the promotional section for the book. If they email us at info@pacs-sda.org, we can send them specific instructions or walk them through the process.
What has the feedback been so far?
The parents and event visitors were impressed, and many asked how to obtain book copies.
How have you seen the kids grow from this experience?
The kids are starting on a new book on opinion writing. It will be released later this year (2025).
